Ahmeek, Michigan 49901

Ahmeek is located in southwestern
Keweenaw County
along US-41 and M-26 in
Allouez Township.
This is a small town that is primarily tourist related because of its
location on the picturesque Keweenaw Peninsula and its proximity to Lake
Superior. The word "Ahmeek" is Chippewa for beaver, which apparently were abundant in the area. It was given that name by John Bosch, the town father, in 1904, when the Mineral Range Railroad built a station here. The town officially incorporated as a village in 1909 when a post office was opened, with attorney James A. Hamilton the first postmaster.
