1679 Fort Miami is founded by Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. It was the first European settlement in the Lower Peninsula.

1954 Charles Diggs is elected to Congress.

1926 The state's worst mining disaster occurs in a cave-in at the Barnes-Hecker Mine near Ispheming.

1962 Ludwik Wesolowski was the first Polish man to be elected as surveyor in Macomb County. According to one noted authority, he was the first person of Polish ancestry elected to any office anywhere in the United States.

1850 Voters approve Michigan's second constitution.

1829 David H. Jerome is born in Detroit.

1958 The Carl D. Bradley sinks near Charlevoix. Only two of the 35-man crew survived. Most of them were from Rogers City.

1966 Michigan State University Spartans tangled the Notre Dame Irish in a 10-10 tie game in East Lansing. This was hailed as the "Game of the Century".

1887 Wakefield is incorporated as a village.

1945 Marlo Thomas is born in Detroit.

1983 Michigan recalls its first legislator, Senator Philip O. Mastin who along with another Democrat from Mt. Clemens, voted for a temporary 38 percent tax increase.

1833 Wiliam Austin Burt is appointed U.S. deputy surveyor.

1971 Henry Ford II announces plans for a 4340 million center to be built in downtown Detroit. At the time of its completion, The Renaissance Center was the tallest in the United States. It has 1,300 rooms.

1863 The Battle of Chattanooga is fought in Tennessee.

1883 Sojourner Truth dies in Battle Creek.

1960 Hockey player, Gordie Howe reaches 1,000 points.

1929 Berry Gordy Jr. is born in Detroit.

1760 French rule of Detroit ends.
