Sweetwater Township is located on the near southwestern border of Lake County. It is bisected by US-10, beginning about 4 miles northwest of Baldwin.
Over three fourths of this Township is situated in the Manistee National Forest. The Pere Marquette River Flows through here, and can be accessed at the scenic Sulac Landing, east off of South Branch Road.
This area was first settled around 1873 by Benjamin Barnett, who built a hotel for lumbermen here at Branch, a small community on the Mason/Lake County line at US-10.
It was named after the north branch of the Pere Marquette River. The Pere Marquette Railroad built a line to the area in 1876, and a post office was opened, with Barnett as the postmaster. |
