Standish is located in southern Arenac County at the junction of M-61 and US-23. It is also the county seat. It was named after John D. Standish, a Detroit businessman who built a sawmill here in 1871. It flourished during the lumber boom, incorporating as a village in 1893 and later a city in 1904.

Today, Standish experiences steady growth due to its location to the Tri-Cities area. It has a diverse economy including metal stamping, trailer manufacturing, commercial printing, door, bus and fire-fighting equipment manufacturing. It is also considered to be a sportman�s headquarters for hunting and canoeing in the surrounding area, including the Tittabasassee River State Forest, Rifle and Au Gres Rivers.
