Cedar - Solon Township Leelanau County, Michigan Solon Township is located in southern Leelanau County, about 7 miles northwest of Traverse City. It lies at the southern end of Lake Leelanau, the County�s main attraction, a 15 mile-long lake running north-and-south. This is a highly scenic area mainly supported by tourism. It contains resorts and cottages and offers fishing and boating opportunities galore! Township offices are located at Cedar, where Lake Leelanau can be accessed by boat at Victoria Creek.

This area was first settled by some families from Solon, Ohio, who moved here during the mid 1860�s. The township was organized in 1872, when Moses C. Cate, a Civil War veteran, became the first supervisor. The town of Cedar was begun by Benjamin Boughey in 1885, a lumberman, who named it after the large cedar forest surrounding the area.
