New Buffalo Township Population: 2000(2468) 1990(2419) Change(49)
Population: 2,419 (1990) New Buffalo Township is located in the south-western most corner of Michigan, in Berrien County. The township is filled with unique summer resort communities nestled all along the Lake Michigan shoreline. This area prospered during the Roaring Twenties as many Chicagoans were able to afford the luxury of a summer cottage on Lake Michigan. The largest of these is New Buffalo. The Galien River flows through the town and out the New Buffalo harbor into Lake Michigan at Lakeside Park, at the end of Whittaker Street. New Buffalo lies on the Red Arrow Highway which is lined with antique stores, art galleries, specialty shops and unique eateries. Interstate 94, running from Detroit to Chicago makes it a quick trip for those wishing to get away from the city heat. The New Buffalo Welcome Center, on I-94 as you enter Michigan from Indiana, is a great place to stop for travel information on the state. |
