Higgins Lake - Lyon Township Population: 2000() 1990() Change()
Lyon Township is located in the northwestern corner of Roscommon County. It is situated on the west side of Higgins Lake, one of the most popular inland lakes in Michigan, known especially for its deep, clear , light blue waters. This is a popular year-round resort area centered around the attractions of the lake. A boat ramp on the west coast of the lake on Old US-27 provides easy access and is also a great place for sightseeing. Other features of the township include the Heidemann Marsh and Dead Stream Swamp, great places for waterfowl hunting. There is also the Nakomis Pathway just south of the lake, a popular hiking and cross-country skiing trail.
Lyon Township was named after Charles Lyon, a local developer who built a hotel at Lyon Manor on the south side of the lake at the turn of the century. Today this area is filled with cottages and summer homes. |
