Lebanon Township, Michigan

48835

Daniel Barker from Washtenaw Co., was one of the early settlers. On the 2nd day of May 1834 he became the first individual landowner in the township. He purchased the west half of section 30 and also the northwest quarter of the section 31. The location was desirable and well chosen. This section was known in the early days as East Plains. (The East Plains Cemetery is about in the middle of section 30.) Sometime in the summer of 1834 Barker's wife and 3 children built a cabin on the west half of the southeast quarter of section 30. It was built about 60 rods to the rear of the Honorable John Vance residence. Barker was about 30 years of age at that time. In 1836 he bought more land in section 20. On June 1, 1837 the Barker's had twin daughters. On November 6, 1837 Daniel Barker went to Ionia to get flour for the family. He met his death trying to cross the Maple River. That made the Barker family the first settlers, the first births and also the first death in the township. His widow and children left the area a year later.   First officers of Lebanon Township (then Wan-dau-gon Township) were elected at the April 1838 meeting.
