Higgins Township Population: 2000(2061) 1990(1685) Change(376)
Higgins Township is located in northeastern Roscommon County. This is a double sized township, 12 X 6 square miles, of which 95 % is included in the Houghton Lake State Forest. Its ecology contains a mixture of pine and oak forest, freshwater marshes, several lakes and streams. Areas such as Robinson Lake Flooding and Little Mud Lake Flooding are noteworthy for duck hunting and fishing. The Firemans Memorial is also a significant point of interest, and is located on Robinson Rd, (Co. Route #103), about a mile east of M-18, just north of the I-75 interchange. The city of Roscommon is the largest community in the area, with township offices located there.
Higgins Township was named after beautiful Higgins Lake, which is only three miles away from the western township line, in neighboring Gerrish Township. Higgins Lake in turn was named after Sylvester Higgins, who was an early surveyor of the area in 1837. |
