Barton City is contained on the townships south side, along Jewell Lake, another popular resort and fishing spot. The village of Lincoln can be found in the townships southeast corner.
Hawes Township was named after Hawes, an old lumbering town that existed briefely from 1899-1908, due to the expansion of the Detroit & Mackinac Railroad there. Barton City was also an old lumbering town, named after an early settler, Frank Barton. It received a post office in 1912 and managed to survive because of its support from the summer resort community situated around Jewell Lake. |
