Historians have varying ideas of how Felch was named. Some believe it was named after Alpheus Felch, a Michigan governor. Others believe it was for Captain Felch of the North Western Mine. Yet others believe the town was named after a man who owned a hotel in Felch and some believe it was named after a family relative.

Felch Mountain was platted by the owners, Jonathan Warner, Charles Hickox, John A. Coughney, and John N. Glidden in 1881. The same summer, the Theodore settlement was platted by the owners, The Lake Superior Ship Canal, Railway and Iron Company.

The village of Metropolitan (now Felch) was platted in 1882 with the request signed by S.P. Burt, president and secretary of The Metropolitan Iron and Land Company.

Felch has a rich history of logging, mining and agriculture. Small schools and churches were established to meet the needs of the immigrants who settled here. As stated in the Felch Centennial Book, "They came, of many nationalities, to mine, to work in lumber camps, or in the mill. Many stayed in this wilderness of pine stumps and dreadful forest fires and wrested from it their livelihood - established a new homeland. By incredible sacrifice and hard work, they gave us a good place to live. We call it Felch Township.

Felch today is a small, close community. The students here attend North Dickinson County School, home the Nordics. Although mining in the Felch area is extinct, the logging industry is still thriving. Several small businesses are scattered throughout the Felch Township area.

Felch is known for its Labor Day Baseball Tournament. Teams from Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois get together for a fun filled weekend of baseball. This tournament has attracted players such as John Hiller and Mark "The Bird" Frydich of the Detroit Tigers. Dewey Solberg of Solbergs Supperclub plans the tournament each year that attracts many baseball fans.

A simple drive through Felch Township does not reveal its beauty. Many wonderful lakes, streams, and small town cafes are hidden along the small country roads that branch off Highway M69 that runs through the center of Felch, Michigan. The people of Felch are known for their kind helping nature.
