Ellsworth Township Population: 2000(821) 1990(622) Change(199)
Ellsworth Township is located on the near northeastern border of Lake County.
It consists primarily of small farms, with the village of Luther on its western border split between this township and neighboring Newkirk Township.
The Little Manistee River flows through here, and is considered one of the better trout streams in the area.
This township was settled in 1867. It, (as well as the city of Ellsworth in Antrim County), was named after Colonel Ephriam Alexander Ellsworth, the first Union officer killed during the Civil War. He was commander of the New York Zouaves, with which the First Michigan Infantry Regiment at Alexandria, Va. fought side-by-side. |
