Denton Township is located in central Roscommon County along the southeast coastline of Houghton Lake, Michigan�s largest inland lake. Its largest community is Prudenville, where township offices are located. There are many stores, restaurants and places to stay here, most of which are situated on a heavily traveled portion of M-55 running along the lake�s south side. The Houghton Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is also located here on M-55 about a mile west of Prudenville, next door to the Historical Village.

This area was originally a lumber settlement. In 1876, the Denton and Rowe Sawmill began operations here, with a post office opening up under the name of Denton.
