Population: 3,717 (1990)
Chikaming Township is located in south Berrien County on the shores of Lake Michigan. The Red Arrow Highway, named after a WWI army unit that included many local men, runs through the heart of this Harbor Country resort area. This historic highway is lined with art galleries, antique shops and unique eateries, such as the Harbert Swedish Bakery. One of the area's most famous residents was Carl Sandburg, who was said to be a patron of the bakery. There are also a few quaint resort towns located here, including Lakeside, Harbert and Sawyer. This area is also home to many parks, beaches and recreation areas. One of the most popular is Warren Woods Natural Area, on Elm Valley Rd and Warren Woods Rd. Its 311 acres consist of a beech/maple climax forest. A hiking trail, including a suspended wooden foot bridge over the Galien River, offers access to this undisturbed natural area, considered one of the best birding area's in Michigan, with certain areas wheelchair accessible. Another choice hiking spot is the 80 acres of Robinson Nature Preserve, located on the north side of East Road, about one mile east of Red Arrow Highway. It features a beech-maple forest and oak upland. It's open to the public, but hunting, camping and fires are banned. Cross country ski trails are available at both locations. |
