Butterfield Township Population: 2000(548) 1990(452) Change(96)

Butterfield Township is located on Missaukee County's near southeastern border.

It contains the small communities of Merritt and Butterfield, with the township hall located in Butterfield, at the junction of County 565 and Lotan Road. Its northern border is marked by M-55.

This area consists mainly of forests and small Christmas tree farms. The Muskegon River also flows through here, with several canoe landings dotted along the shore. The Houghton Lake Wildlife Research Area is located on the east side of the river, and is a good spot for bird watching, perhaps even seeing a bald eagle every once-in -awhile.
