Benzonia Township Population: 2000(2839) 1990(2405) Change(434)
Benzonia Township is located in the central/western are of Benzie County. Its main communities are Benzonia and Beulah, situated on beautiful Crystal Lake. Historically, this area was settled first in the 1850s, and was the proposed site of a Christian College founded by the Rev. Charles E. Bailey. The first community was situated on what was then called Herring Creek, until the French named it: "Aux Bec Scies," referring to a species of sawbill duck abundant in the area at that time. Shortly afterwards, sailors nicknamed the river: "Betsie." In 1869, the name was refined to "Benzie" and became the county name when it organized that year. Today, the township has developed into a beautiful resort area. |
