Benton Charter Township Population: 2000(16404) 1990(17163) Change(-759)
Population 17,163 (1990)
Benton Charter Township lies on the shores of Lake Michigan in the northern portion of Berrien County. The southern boundary of the township is along the banks of the St. Joseph River. Lake Michigan and the St. Joseph River make the area a favorite for fishermen and boaters. The pier at the mouth of the St. Joseph River leading to the lake is a choice spot to cast a line or watch a sunset. The largest community within the township is Benton Harbor, with its population of over 13,000 (1990). Benton Charter Township boasts some of the best orchards and grape vineyards of the county. Growers can take their crops to the Benton Harbor Fruit Market, on Territorial Road, east of Benton Harbor. This cash- to-grower fruit market is the largest in the world, open May through October. Although the market is for wholesalers, adults are welcome to watch as long as they stay out of the way of the goings on. It is possible to buy at the market if a permit is purchased at the market office. The I-94 Detroit-Chicago Corridor runs through the township, providing easy access to the area and a host of shopping, eateries, and motels for your convenience. |
