Delton - Barry Township Population: 2000() 1990() Change()
elton is located in Barry Township in southwestern Barry County on M-43. White settlers first came to the area in the mid 1830s, where Josiah Hine was credited with purchasing the first piece of land here. In 1877, Adelbert E. Monroe, also known as "Dell" Monroe, bought a main corner lot, built a general store and became the towns first postmaster. At that time, the town was given station status by the Chicago, Kalamazoo and Saginaw Railroad. First known locally as Dellstown, it was officially renamed Delton after some mail was returned there with the address heading of "Delton" on it.
Today, Delton remains the center of the township - a growing rural community surrounded by several scenic lakes and well-maintained farms. |
