Aetna Township is located in the near southeastern section of Missaukee County. It is a rural area consisting of farmland, with a few scattered wooded areas. It is bordered on the north by M-55. It also contains an oil field to the south along Butterfield Creek. There is also an old Indian mound type burial ground to the east, contained in a small, undeveloped section of the Missaukee State Forest.

This township was once was the location of a small town in 1906 named Dinca, which existed until about 1914. It was begun by John Spoelma, a Dutch imigrant who built a store there.
