South Range is located in southern Houghton County, about four miles southwest of the city of Houghton. It contains a few small businesses and has its own school. It functions primarily as a bedroom community to the greater Houghton-Hancock area.

This town was founded in 1902 by the Wealkate Mining Company, who platted and registered the town. It was named for its location on the south end of the Copper Range Mines, which ran its own railway through the area for mining operations. The railway built a line through here in 1905, opening a post office. It was incorporated as a village a year later.
