Sherwood is located in northwestern Branch County in the township of the same name. It is a small community that functions primarily as a commuter town to the greater Coldwater and Sturgis areas, both of which lie within ten miles to the east and west respectively. It has a village form of government and its own elementary school. One notable historic fact is that Sherwood contains the oldest built Free Methodist Church in Michigan.

Sherwood was first settled by Alexander E. Tomlinson, who moved here from Sherwood Forest, England in 1839. It received a station on the Michigan Central Railroad line in 1871, which helped bring stability to the area. It was eventually incorporated as a village in 1887.
