This quiet community bisected by M-46 and embraced by a bend of the Pine River occupies the exact geographical center of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.. Preceded by the Bethany Lutheran Indian Mission founded in 1846, the settlement was founded by Joseph Clapp of Ohio in 1853. The beautiful City Park which now bears a marker designating the geographical center of Lower Michigan was a portion of the original Clapp homestead. This town grew rapidly, becoming Gratiot County's first incorporated city in 1868. Lumber, wood products, and salt wells provided a base for wealth. The discovery of a mineral spring in 1869 proved a magnet for tourists. Today, children play in a swimming pool near the site of the spring. An electric power plant generates energy from a dam on the Pine River; forests have given way to farmlands; the Michigan Livestock Exchange on the east side of town denotes the importance of agriculture in the area. Though many of the grand Victorian buildings have given way to modern structures, in some of the Mill Street business district, in magnificent Elwell Mansion on M-46, and in the serenity of Bethany Lutheran Indian Cemetery on Riverside Drive, traces of the past may still be seen.
