Richland is located in northeastern Kalamazoo County at the junction of M-89 and M-43.

This village has an Early American classical design, with a park as the central town square surrounded by businesses, a church and public library. In addition to agricultural and local small business, it contains some medium level production facilities, including office furniture manufacturing.

Richland was named after the township, which in turn was originally named for its proximity to beautiful Gull Lake, located two miles to the northeast.

It was first platted as Gull Corners by Willard and Sylvester Mills in 1833. In 1840, it was given a post office and re-named Richland. This town was also the intersection of the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad and the Chicago, Kalamazoo & Saginaw Railroad during the lumber era in the late 1800s.
