Portland is located in southeastern Ionia County and situated on the mouth of Looking Glass River as it flows into the Grand. It is easily accessed off of I-96, with 2 exits available. This is a progressive community with a diverse economy, ranging from small businesses to several manufacturing facilities, many of them auto-industry related. The downtown area features an old-fashioned town clock overlooking main Street and adjacent bridge, complete with scenic walkway to the park on the other side of the river.

The rivers accent the entire area and are the reason why this city was named Portland back in 1838 - a fine loading place for boats. At that time, the town played a key role in the transport and distribution of lumber due to it�s location. It was eventually incorporated into a village in 1869.
