The twin water towers of Perrinton and Middleton rise amid clusters of trees and houses from the level farmland just north of M-57 in the southwest corner of Gratiot County. Of the two communities, only Perrinton is incorporated, though they are closely linked in spirit as well as by the railroad that passes on the north side of each, affording handcar rides each June during the Frontier Days festival in nearby Carson City. A substantial Mennonite population molds the character of these communities of modest, hard-working people who live close to the land and excel in domestic arts now nearly lost among more urban surroundings. For a delectable piece of homemade pie or a loaf of fresh-baked bread, an oak cabinet or a colorful handmade quilt (or a quilting class), Perrinton and neighboring Middleton are worth the short detour off M-57.
