Norton Shores is located just south of Muskegon in Muskegon County. It is considered one of the major suburbs of the greater Muskegon area. It is situated around beautiful Mona Lake, which provides access by boat to Lake Michigan. It is composed primarily of residential properties with its own city government and school system. It also contains the Muskegon County Airport, known for its spectacular air show held annually every summer, usually the third weekend in July.

Norton Shores was named after a Colonel S. Norton who settled in the area in 1846. He built a sawmill a few miles south, just over the border into Ottawa County. This led to the development of a community called Nortonville, which existed until the late 1870s, when the lumber boom ended.
