Muir is located in eastern Ionia County on the Maple River, just a couple of miles from its mouth at the Grand River. It is adjacent to Lyons, just across the river to the south. Like Lyons, this community once flourished during the lumber days and developed when the railroad came through. It was originally called Montrose Station in 1854, in order to attract people from the city by the same name in New York to settle there. In 1857, H.K. Muir was able to influence the Detroit, Muskegon & Western RR, (later the Grand Trunk), to build a line to the town. The town was thus renamed in his honor. It eventually was incorporated into a village in 1871.

This community has withstood the test of time due to its convenient location to adjacent urban areas. It retains its small town atmosphere and remains a pleasant and quiet place to live for commuters.
