|In 1836 Farnsworth & Brush built the first sawmill in this area. The settlement was given a post office on May 23, 1863, with Norman Soule as its first postmaster. In 1871 the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad reached here.|
This settlement named after the Indian tribe from whom the federal government obtained the remainder of the Upper Peninsula by treaty in 1836 was incorporated as a city in 1883.
