Lyons is a quiet, picturesque, small community in eastern Ionia County. It is located on the Grand River a few miles away from the mouth of the Maple River and the adjacent community of Muir. Before it was formed, it was the site of Chigaumichkene, a major Indian village. Its first white settlers were the H. V. Libart Family, who came to the area in 1833 and named it Arthursburg. In 1836, Lucius Lyon purchased most of the property there and renamed it Lyons. It eventually incorporated into a village in 1859. This small town once flourished during the lumber days but has survived the years functioning as an adjacent community to larger metro areas such as Ionia, Grand Rapids and Lansing. It has retained much of its Victorian architecture, however, and has become a favorite spot for color tours and Sunday drives. For a good picnic spot, try the park along the river by the dam. Or come celebrate the "Island Fest" on DeVore Island in June.
