Lawton is located in the southeast section of Van Buren County in the heart of what is known as Michigan’s Wine Country. Named after Nathan Lawton, who in 1848 gave 10 acres to the Michigan Central Railroad to entice them to build a line to his property, this area was soon realized to be valuable for growing and harvesting grapes, as well as other orchard fruits. Today, Lawton is known to be the center for grape juice production in the US, including a major Welch’s plant in the town.|
