Laurium, Michigan

Laurium was named after the mining company which originally platted the village and after a town in ancient Greece which was famed for its mining site - in that case silver, in this case copper.

Laurium was incorporated by the supervisors of the mining company as Calumet in 1889 and then reincorporated and renamed Laurium in 1895.

Laurium is also known for the large and opulent home built for Captain Thomas H. Hoatson, owner of the C & A Mining Co., no expense was spared in constructing this 13,000 sq. ft. 40 room mansion.

In 1895 George Gipp was born in Laurium and went on to be a famous halfback for Notre Dame. He died unexpectedly of pneumonia at the end of the 1920 season. President Ronald Reagan played the part of Gipp and gave this famous line, " When things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go in there with all they've got and win one just for the Gipper!" in the movie Knute Rockne -- All American.
