Lansing is located in Ingham County in Michigan�s central lower peninsula at the crossroads of Interstate 96 and US-27. Lansing was named after the city of Lansing in Tomkins County, New York by Joseph H. North in 1841, a native from there who moved to Michigan. Both cities were named to commemorate Revolutionary War Hero and legal author, John Lansing. The Michigan Legislature voted to make this city the state capitol in 1847. The Capitol Building was constructed in 1878 and is still in use. - A tour of the building is well worth the time to appreciate the workings of state government as well as the beautiful turn-of-the-century architecture.

Lansing became one of the key players in the development of the automobile with the establishment of the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors there. It also developed a significant role in agriculture research at Michigan State University, one of the original Land Grant colleges. Today, Lansing is moving full speed ahead with a bright new future. From sold-out crowds for the Lugnuts at Oldsmobile Park, to community activities at the exquisite Riverfront Plaza, the city is alive with newfound energy and enthusiasm.
