L'Anse, Michigan

Lanse is the county seat of Baraga County. It is located at the southern end, or bottom of Lanse Bay, part of the larger Keweenau Bay in Lake Superior. Its economic base includes mining, lumbering and lumber-related manufacturing and tourism.

This community began as a mission to the Indians in 1660 by the French Jesuit priest, Father Rene Menard. Later, a Methodist mission was organized here. By the 1830s, this area was well recognized as a significant mining area, with deposits of iron, quartz, slate, graphite and peat having been discovered. The first trading post was built by Peter Crebassa in 1837: considered the town father, he eventually became the first postmaster in 1866. At that time, the then Marquette, Houghton & Ontonagon Railroad was building a line through the area to service the heavy mining and lumbering going on there. It was eventually incorporated into a village in 1873.
