Hudsonville is located in southeastern Ottawa County. It was named after Homer E. Hudson, the first postmaster there, in 1872. Prior to that, it was called Georgetown after the township. It was incorporated into a city in 1857. Hudsonvilles permanency was established when it received a station on the Chicago & Western Railroad in 1874, managed by Horace Hudson. After the lumber boom, it survived because of agriculture, being located in some of the most fertile farmland in Michigan.

The area is still known today for its fine produce. In the last two decades, Hudsonville has grown into a major suburb of the greater Grand Rapids metro area, which includes a mall in the center of town.
