Hubbardston is located in the very northeastern corner of Ionia County. This village is situated on Fish Creek, complete with dam and scenic pond above. Hubbardston is primarily a rural, agricultural community, and retains its small-town atmosphere.

This area was originally settled by James R. Langdon, who came from Vermont and purchased 2000 acres. In 1852, a Joseph Brown purchased 240 acres on Fish Creek and built a dam and sawmill. He was bought out a year later by Thomas Hubbard and his partners, who eventually plotted and registered the town as Plains. It was officially re-named Hubbardston in 1859 and eventually incorporated into a village in 1867.
