Hartford is situated in southwestern Van Buren County on the Red Arrow Highway, approximately one mile north of I-94. It is supported by mid level manufacturing, including metal castings, and agricultural products processing, including fruit tree production, bean, corn and fruit processing.

The first settler to Hartford was Ferdino Olds who arrive in 1837. He named it Hartland, after his home town in New York. Because there was already a town called Hartland in Michigan, it was renamed Hartford at the suggestion of other residents. It received a post office in 1856 and eventually received a station on the Pere Marquette Railroad in 1870. It was incorporated into a village in 1877.
