Grant is located in southern Newaygo County . It functions primarily as a small agricultural community but also as a commuter town to the greater Grand Rapids area. It has its own school system and village form of government.

Grant was originally named "Grant Center", after Ulysses S. Grant, in 1882 by one of its first inhabitants, Andrew J. Squier, who built a saw mill there. That year, it received a station on the Pere Marquette Railroad. It was incorporated into a village in 1893. The name was shortened to "Grant" in 1899.
