Clio is located near the northern border of
Genesee County, in the middle of the junctions of M-57, M-54, and US-23. It functions primarily as an adjunct community to the greater Flint area, with many of its residents commuting to work in Flint. It also has a significant amount of manufacturing and small businesses. Like so many others in Michigan, Clio began as a lumbering town. It started in 1837 when Theodore P. Dean built a sawmill here. The Pere Marquette Railroad in 1861 built the Varna Station here (so named because it was on the Varna family farm). It was renamed Clio by the first postmaster, David Huyck in 1866. It was incorporated as a village in 1873 and later as a city in 1928.
