Clinton is located on the northeastern border of
Lenawee County, about 4 miles north of Tecumseh. It is situated on
the River Raisin, bisected by historical US-12, the old
Chicago-to-Detroit Route. Clinton’s economy is supported by a variety of
business, including auto glass manufacturing, lumber and tourism. Points
of interest include the turn-of-the-century architecture downtown,
featuring the Clinton Inn, and some old railroad cars and engines from
the Michigan Central Railroad, which can be found on the town’s
southwest side. Clinton was named after DeWitt Clinton, originator of the Erie Canal in New York State, which many settlers coming to Michigan used to get here. The first settlers to the area included John Terrill, Thaddeus Clark and Horatio Baldwin, who came here in 1830. It was incorporated as a village in 1837 with a census then of already 925. It eventually received a station of the Michigan Southern Railroad in 1878. The first permanent settler was Alpheus Kies, who was born in Woodstock, Connecticut. Kies came here with his family in 1829. He built a log cabin at the northwest corner of Tecumseh St and US-12 where the Clinton Inn is now located.
