Carney, Michigan49812
Photos courtesy of: Ken Huisjen | Carney is located in south/central Menominee County along US-41, about seven miles south of the US-2 junction. This is a small farming community located on the Wisconsin-Central Railway, which parallels 41. It contains a few small businesses, a wood processing facility and has its own elementary school. It also functions as a bedroom community to the more populated Menominee/Marinette area to the south.
This area was first settled in 1879 during the lumber boom. The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad built a line through the area and opened a post office in 1882. It was named after Fred Carney, a lumber baron from Marinette, Wisconsin, who had the majority of timber and land interests in the area.
