Calumet developed around the mines of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company and was composed mainly of the officers and employees of the mines.

Calumet was given a post office in 1866. Gradually it encompassed the seperate communities of Laurium, Hecla, and South Hecla. In 1929 it united with the incorporated village of Red Jacket, keeping the name of Calumet.

The word "calumet" is an Indian name for the clay stone bowl of the peace pipe.

Calumet is also home to Coppertown USA museum and visitor center, which tells the story of the mines, communities and people of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
