Brooklyn, Michigan

Brooklyn is located in the beautiful Irish Hills section of southeastern Jackson County. Situated between Lake Columbia and Vineyard Lake, headwaters of the River Raisin, this stately village features a town square-like setting with a cupola in its center, separating north and south bound traffic.

Brooklyn’s economic base is supported generally by local business and traffic from M-50 and M-124 which join just to the south.

Brooklyn was first settled in 1832 by the Rev. Calvin H Swain, a Baptist minister who moved here from Washington County, New York and built a sawmill, and calling it Swainsville. The name was changed to Brooklyn, after Brooklyn, New York, by popular vote in 1836.

It was officially organized as a village in 1879.
