It is conveniently located approximately half way between Flint and Saginaw, making it an ideal adjunct community to both metropolitan areas. This town is best known for its large outlet mall located just off the I-75 exit to the southwest. It is also known for many unique specialty restaurants. With this winning combination, it makes a great place to spend an entire day. Birch Run was originally founded as a station on the Pere Marquette Railroad by John Moore, its first postmaster, in 1852. It was named after its creek, which runs through a large birch area. In 1863, the town was renamed Deer Lick and remained so until 1868 when it reverted back to Birch Run. It was organized as a village in 1954.
