Baraga is named after Bishop Frederick Baraga. In 1875 Baraga became a county. Originally Baraga was part of Houghton County. Because of the abundance of beaver, fox, wolf and deer pelts, early trading posts were established. Along with the abundance of wildlife, lumbering, mining, and agriculture attracted settlers.
