| In 1861, while surveying a road through here, Captain Rudolph Papst made camp at an old hunter's cabin where he found in it a much-used axe. The Captain used the name on the Minutes of Survey and later on his county map. For a short time the name was changed to Huron but the townspeople voted it back to it's original name. Bad Axe is the county seat of Huron County. It is centrally located in the county and offers a wide range of stores from national department chains to small boutiques. A short drive north, east or west is the shoreline of either Lake Huron or Saginaw Bay. Pioneer Log Village is a favorite tourist attraction. It is a unique settlement of historic buildings that includes a log cabin home, a blacksmith shop, a chapel, a general store, a barn and a one room school house. Each is fully furnished to replicate 19th century pioneer living.
