The village of Alanson in Littlefield Township was first settled in 1875; it was given a post office named Hinman on Jan. 17, 1877, with Hollis Frayer as its first postmaster; on June 22, 1882, it was renamed Alanson for Alanson Cook, an official of the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad which first came through here then; incorporated as a village in 1905.

Today this quaint village on the Crooked River is known for its beautiful Hillside Gardens and Worlds shortest swing bridge. Alanson is home to several excellent dining establishments and shops to browse.
